The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) proved that just 7% weight loss reduces the risk of diabetes by over 50% and is cost-effective over a ten-year period. However, implementation and dissemination of programs similar to DPP have not been successful. For example, face-to-face coaching programs are not scalable due to cost, shortage of healthcare professionals and delivery sites. Population-based approaches emphasizing education and group sessions lack customization and suffer from poor retention rates. Emerging Internet-based coaching approaches address these challenges by offering scalable, cost-effective and yet personalized lifestyle intervention solutions. However, they are often heavy on technology and light on clinically validated programmatic protocols. Beyond Weight is a clinically validated, affordable and automated digital self-coaching program for use anytime and anywhere eliminating the need for coaching visits. This new book is for people who are on a mission to lose weight in a healthy and sustainable way for the long term.

The materials included in this book are available at our medical center Beyond Care and in our digital app BeyondWeight - available on Amazon.

We decided it would be useful to make our guidelines and recipes also available for when people when they are cooking, shopping or simply for self-learning.

These materials are generated and clinically tested over a period of 20 years. The average weight loss at our center is about 10% of initial body weight in 6 months and users of our app lose about 7% in 6 months. However, more importantly, our dietary guidelines result in long term and healthy weight loss.

We wish you great success in reaching your weight loss goal. Remember: reaching weight loss as a goal is different than other goals; it matters how you get there.

Yi Body Composition Tool 

In ancient Chinese philosophy the character Yi means being righteous and doing good. For us, Yi stands for Yavari Indicator, a scientifically validated biometric algorithm that determines body composition such as fat distribution and muscle mass within a couple of pounds of a body X-ray scanner. It also sets weight loss goals to reduce risks of diabetes and cardiovascular disease - not based on BMI or an ideal weight on the scale but based on body composition and metabolic risk reduction targets.

Finally, the number on the scale will not matter as much as a healthy Yi! 



Simulation Coaching

People who lose weight gain it back unless they are forever diligent and always prepared.  Simulation Coaching uses examples of unexpected life events that often cause relapse – if one is not prepared – in the form of quizzes called lifejigs to drill and ready participants. Users are asked to pick the best solution to a hypothetical situation or a problem. By engaging in counter-factual or conditional thinking users self-teach skills needed when facing setback or adversity. This way the “what if” or “if only” outcomes prepare users for a variety of situations that could result in relapse.

Personality traits often color our life choices and influence our daily decisions. Weight regain is partly physiological, but it is also behavioral and is swayed by our personality. Impulsive and uncontrolled eating behaviors can be avoided by cognitive behavior modification. Beyond Weight identifies personality weaknesses and cognitive limitations and teaches users – like a pocket trainer – skills needed to overcome challenges to stay on track for long term weight loss. Our incentive-based approach helps participants recognize their personal shortcomings and learn lifestyle enhancement skills to remain resilient and motivated.
